[continued from the DES home page]DID YOU SEE ... 2.24.05The National Conference of State Legislatures issued a critique of NCLB on February 23. It cites under- and unfunded mandates, the formerly huge but now rarely mentioned issue of local (vs. national) control over education, and the implict message of NCLB that one kind of education and one kind of assessment works for all students - including those with special needs. Here in upstate New York, the report is big for another reason, as well: the central role played by our state senator, Stephen Saland. Senator Saland was one of 16 legislative members of the NCSL task force that issued the report. We appreciate his work. GROWING PAINS 2.23.05DES is undergoing a major redesign. The changes include updated state and subject area links; new sections on NCLB, assessment, research, and opinion about standards and assessments; and more. The redesign will be completed by March 15, 2005, with individual modifications appearing as they are ready. |
